FENG SHUI! A dance of wind and water

Feng shui is a pseudoscience believed to have originated from china comprising and aligning five elements such as wood,fire,earth,metal and water in an interior to bring harmony and peace. This practice has been for over 3000 years and becoming quite popular in recent times. Though some belive that it took its inspiration from the Indian vastu-shastra, which is nothing but science behind architecture, it emphasizes in the consolidation of the five elements. Feng shui helps in assimilating the good energies and bring nourishment to homes. There are certain design elements, in the form of shapes, colors and decor, which help in bringing these elements into the homes though they work the best when aligned properly some of the basic instructions are discussed below.

1) WOOD – Growth and vitality     Colors: Green and brown


Shape: Rectangle


 Decor: wood statues and figurines, wall murals, wood wind chimes, plants, lighting, rugs etc.,







Directions they are welcomed in: E,SE,S

2) FIRE – Passion and success     Color: warm colors, purple, magenta and pink




Shape: pointy shapes like triangle, star, pentagon or hexagon


Decor: candles, lamps and oil lanterns, warm colored accessories, pointed light fixtures and furniture, warm light colors.






Directions they are welcomed in: S, SW, NE and center.

3) EARTH – Stability and nourishment     Colors: shades,tones and tints of brown



Shape: square


Decor: any decor items made of materials like crystal, terracotta, clay so any form of earthenware and salt lamps. Further inclusion of materials like pebbles, and sand wall might help. also use of natural stone will elevate the look and impart a positive energy into the interiors.

4) METAL – Clarity and ease     Color: white and grey


Shape: round


Decor: any form of metal wall art or decor be it photo frames, mirror frames, string decor any metal of metal finish or matte finish qualifies for this category. also round accessories of metal with matte finishes are preferred which can be incorporated in lighting and furniture.






Directions they are welcomed in: W,NW,W,E,SE

5) WATER – Flow and freedom     Color: shades,tints and tones of blue


Shape: wavy and curvy



 Decor: interior fountains, water walls, mini aquariums and ponds, mirrors to create flow and also incorporating images of water bodies. Further using wavy shapes in form of light, wall paneling and furniture also blue floor tiles will be a good choice.








 Directions they are welcomed in: N,E,SE
